Danielle’s Story

Born and raised in Newport Beach, Danielle is a beach girl at heart who has never shied away from spending time outdoors with her friends, family, or puppy Teddi. In 2006 she began her freshman year at UCLA where she joined the Alpha Delta Pi (ADPi) sorority. Since it took away time from her studies, Danielle's parents never loved the idea of her being in a sorority until she received an email from an ADPi alumnae in search of a Finance intern for The Walt Disney Company. Being a lifetime lover of classic movies and her family's longest running tradition of visiting Disneyland on Christmas Eve, Disney was the perfect internship opportunity. Danielle graduated with a degree in International Economics and minor in Accounting and turned that internship into an 11 year and growing career. From 2015-2017, while getting her MBA from Duke University, Danielle had a chance to travel the world and experience living as a local in Shanghai, New Delhi, Santiago, and Berlin. After that, Danielle moved to Newport where she spends her time playing tug-o-war with Teddi on the beach, running around the bay, playing softball on her company team, and participating in the annual Disneyland canoe races.

Evan’s Story

Due Christmas Day, Evan decided to hold out three additional days because he enjoyed the rent free space he was occupying. He was always destined to live near the beach as the first thing he saw coming out of the womb was the ocean from the hospital room in Laguna Beach (not that he remembers that or anything). Growing up in historic San Juan Capistrano, Evan was raised with a true love and passion for history. By the age of 23 he had visited all 50 states, every major Civil War battle site, and most of the homes of the United States Presidents. He jokingly deemed himself “king of the nerds” when he was elected National Chief (or President) of the Boy Scouts of America. After graduating from the University of California, San Diego, Evan operated his own successful political consulting firm. During this time he discovered an affinity for screenwriting, filming, editing and voice acting. For the last four years, Evan has been a management consultant working with some of the top companies around the world. Currently, he serves on the Orange County Council BSA Board of Directors, mentors scouts at the national level, and enjoys spending time with his close confidant Kubrick “Kubi” Chaffee (pictured above).

Our Relationship

Like many of the best love stories of the 21st century, Danielle and Evan met through an online dating app. What’s unique about their online dating venture is they actually met twice. Danielle and Evan had met on one site in the winter of 2019 and planned to go out on a first date on February 21st. Fate had another plan in mind and delayed their first meeting. One year later in the Winter of 2020, Danielle and Evan stumbled upon each other again and unbeknownst to them planned a new first date on the same day, one year later. Their first date was a fun and romantic evening that began at the Irvine Yard House. The two were immediately attracted to one another and got lost in conversation, making them late for a comedy show at the Irvine Improv. After a sweet kiss good night, the two couldn’t wait to see each other again and went on their second date just a couple of days later. Soon after, Danielle and Evan knew they must tackle the first obstacle in their young relationship… introducing the dogs. After a fun beach date and walk to the Golden Road Brewery, it was clear Teddi and Kubi would be lifelong friends. Just a couple of weeks later, the world changed for everyone as the COVID-19 pandemic became real. Danielle and Evan spent a weekend together in lockdown where they joyfully proclaimed their admiration for one another and decided to create a quarantine bubble together. In a true COVID relationship, the couple spent weekends together hanging out on the Newport Bay or traversing around the Huntington Harbor. Even in these strange times, the two are always out seeking safe and fun adventures together. Whether it’s camping (a first for Danielle) in Catalina or going to the Keenland horse races (a first for Evan) the couple is always up for trying something new which undoubtfully gives them lots to talk about with their family and friends. Danielle and Evan complement each other and the two peas in a pod are more perfect together than they could have ever imagined possible.

Michelle Akeley

Danielle can fondly remember when her sorority sister excitingly said, you have to meet Michelle, she is perfect for ADPi! Michelle, a musical theater major with an outgoing bubbly personality, quickly became everybody's best friend, which is still true today. Having both grown up in So Cal beach towns, Michelle and Danielle have a lot in common from their love of movies and shows to being Disney buddies. The two have spent numerous times wandering through the parks, experiencing new attractions, and having cocktails at Club 33. After spending 10 years teaching children for Puttin' on Productions (POPs) in Manhattan Beach, Michelle was accepted into the Directors Guild of America (DGA) trainee program which she officially graduates from in June as a 2nd Assistant Director (AD).

Jessica Baldwin

Danielle met Jess very shortly after they both joined ADPi in the fall of 2006. Being in the same pledge class, Jess and Danielle became immediate friends and spent countless nights dressing up and going to sorority & fraternity events together. They were roommates when Jess met Kevin, the love of her life. The two girls joked about growing old together, staying lifelong friends, and raising children together in So Cal (even though Jess has a head start, the rest still holds true today). This year Jess and Kevin celebrated their 5 year wedding anniversary and for his birthday they gave their 3 year old son Jonathan a baby brother named Ethan. For the past 6 years, Jess has worked at Kaiser West LA and is currently the Department Administrator for General Surgery and Urology.

Evan Hess

Hess first met Evan via the Boy Scouts, where he promptly told a 16 year old Evan Chaffee that he wasn’t living up to the “Evan” name. Emboldened by the conversation, Chaffee redeemed himself by becoming national president of the Boy Scouts. A two time USC graduate, Hess inspired many years of USC football season ticket holding amongst the friend group. Hess is one of the most academically accomplished individuals Chaffee knows as he holds a JD, EdD, Paramedic License… and who knows what else. Hess has been wrestling coach to USC and Cal State Northridge. He is a Law Professor at El Camino College, Managing Partner of a law firm, and advises a Paramedic Explorer Post. Of his most recent accomplishments, Hess married his longtime love Cristina in the midst of a global pandemic and allowed Chaffee, and Chris Johnson to socially distantly stand by his side.

Chris Johnson

Chaffee met Chris via Hess on a random spring break excursion to Tijuana. While the story of that trip remains a mystery, the legend still lives on. Also an Eagle Scout, an instant kinship was formed. Over the years, this trio of friends (amongst others) went on road trips, camping, USC football games, worked on home construction projects, and celebrated holidays as well as major personal milestones together. Of all of Evan’s friends, Chris has been most influential as both trusted personal and professional confidant and sounding board. For the past two years Evan and Chris were roommates in Irvine and in Chris’ new waterfront home in Huntington Beach (where they bought an awesome boat). Chris is an emergent leader and executive in the bio-tech space where he has delivered breakthroughs in support of new lifesaving technologies.

Engagement

Our Engagement.

After just a few months together, Evan asked Danielle how soon he could propose. Both thought that one year from their first date would be apropos. Two weeks prior to the big day, Danielle knew when Evan might get on one knee but didn’t know how it would go down.

Evan was quite worried he’d spill the beans as he likes to tell Danielle everything. Instead, he went to his place in Huntington Beach for a week and began orchestrating a memorable proposal. Enlisting the help of several friends, Evan engraved and epoxied a special sign and token (Special Thanks to Alex and Rachel Damm), purchased engagement gear (champagne, glasses, wedding planner, etc.), enlisted Ray & Rachel Genneway to take pictures, and Chris Johnson to video the event and purchase flowers.

On Sunday, February 21, 2021, Danielle returned home to a text from Evan requesting her assistance to take the dogs for a walk. The foursome walked down to the docks near where all the engagement accouterments were waiting. After a few moments of appreciating one another as well as the beauty of their home in Newport Beach, Evan got down on one knee and was grateful to hear Danielle say the magic word. She exuberantly responded with “Yes! A Million Times Yes!,” when asked for her hand in marriage.
